Fabio Leimer continued to set the pace on the second and final day of
GP2 testing at the Jerez circuit in Spain.
Leimer was followed by Coloni's Fabio Onidi, the Italian finishing less than
two tenths behind in a very close morning session which saw a total of 14
drivers within a second.
Lotus ART's Jules Bianchi was fastest in the afternoon, but his time was
nearly second off the pace set by Leimer in the morning. The 14 quickest times
of the day were in fact set in the morning session.
Nigel Melker ended the day as third quickest in the Arden car, while GP2
returnee Javier Villa completed a promising day in the Super Nova machine by
posting the fourth fastest time ahead of Kevin Ceccon in the second Coloni.
Ceccon caused the first red flag of th day just after the lunch break when he
spun and stopped on track. There were another three stoppages before the end of
the day.
The next post-season test will take place in Barcelona on October
19-20.

GP2 : 2011 Jerez post season September test - Fabio Leimer dominates on Day 2

While Arden International, Scuderia Coloni and Super Nova Racing did not change their line-up for today, the other teams welcomed new faces, including newcomers Rupert Svendsen-Cook at Racing Engineering, GP3 graduate Tom Dillmann at Barwa Addax, Giovanni Venturini at Dams, and Yuki Shiraishi at Ocean Racing Technology.
The morning session opened in cooler temperatures than the day before, Javier Villa set the early pace but his best lap time was soon improved by the Coloni pair Fabio Onidi and Kevin Ceccon.
At the half hour mark, it was yesterday’s fastest man Fabio Leimer in the Racing Engineering car who took advantage of better grip to again claim the top spot and his lap time of 1'26.701 remained unbeaten until the chequered flag, one tenth quicker than Onidi.
GP3 graduate Nigel Melker finished a mere five hundredths behind the Italian proving that he is adjusting well to his Arden machine on his second day of testing with the British team and Villa, Ceccon, roolie Felix Da Costa, Jules Bianchi, Sam Bird, Max Chilton and Julian Leal rounded out the top ten.

Following a one hour lunch break, the pit lane re-opened, but the session was quickly red flagged after Ceccon spun and stopped in the gravel trap.
At the restart, rookie James Calado at Lotus ART was free to set the early pace ahead of Bianchi and Bird, but just before the one hour mark, Bird at the wheel of his Trident car went top, half a second quicker than his countryman.
It was then Bianchi’s turn to claim top spot going one tenth faster than Bird as Julian Leal also at Trident moved up to P3.
The session was briefly red flagged three more times before the last hour of the session, and at the chequered flag, Bianchi retained his top spot ahead of Bird, Leal, Arden’s rookie Simon Trummer, Calado, GP2 returnee Alexander Rossi at Caterham Team AriAsia, iSport’s Nathanël Berthon, Chilton, Ceccon and Jolyon Palmer at Barwa Addax. Onidi ended this testing as best rookie.
Next 2011 post season test session will take place in Barcelona on October 19-20 and will be the final stop before flying to Abu Dhabi for the 2011 GP2 Final on November 11-12-13.
Fabio Leimer
“It was a very good day. Like yesterday we were quick straight away in the morning session. We worked on different solutions today, which helped us to improve the lap times even further. I was really happy with the morning session and in the afternoon we worked on long runs, taking advantage of the weather conditions to learn more about the behaviour of the tyres. We had two good days of testing and I would like to thank the team for the good work done.”
Rupert Svendsen-Cook
“I think we really progressed during the test day and I improved my lap time each outing. Arriving at the test on the second day without knowing the car or circuit before, made it a great challenge. I have to thank Racing Engineering for the opportunity today and for making my first transition into GP2 a competitive one.”
Alexander Rossi
“This afternoon was much better than this morning. It’s been a big adjustment for me to get used to the GP2 car, to say it’s different from a World Series car is an understatement, but once we’d figured out the balance it was good fun. We are missing a little time but I think that it will come. I like this track, it’s difficult on tyres especially in these hot conditions but at the end of the day we came out looking quite good and I am looking forward to the next test in Barcelona. These cars are quicker than World Series, so as a driver you got to love that!”
Ricardo Teixeira
“It was really nice to get back into a car after a very long time. We had a good run today. The tyres are quite difficult to get used to, they’re quite different from two years ago when I raced in the GP2 Series, but it was fun. I managed to get some speed back which will help me in the Barcelona test for sure. Unfortunately I have a hand injury which was quite painful, but overall it was worth it to be back in the car and working with all the boys!”
